This morning, I awoke to the sound of rain tapping on my window. Looking outside, I saw our little Cathay's Terrace street all puddled up and gray. I got down from my bed and got ready for a wet little day. I also made sure to tuck my music inside a bag before putting it in my case, as I usually do during the wet seasons when my fiddle accompanies me.
I finished getting ready just after Calysta had arrived. Apparently she needed a page turner, so she recruited Miya to come along with us. We had arranged with the first counselor the night before to practice on the keyboard there an hour early, so we left at 9am. The rain remained very steady as we walked briskly to our church building.
We got there about 15 minutes before the first counselor did, so by the time we got in, we had about 40 minutes to learn our parts and then mesh them together. Cool huh? Fortunately our church has two keyboards, so we were able to put this time to good private use. The piece wasn't a breeze, but it was simple enough that we both got it down to a degree that even we appreciated with our limited time.
We exchanged a few nervous sighs before heading downstairs to Sacrament meeting, just as it was beginning. Once the meeting got started, we were announced as the opening number before all the testimonies. Strange, I know, but the church is still true. I appreciated getting it out of the way early; I have this tendency to stress about some things if I am given time to think instead of just act. Aside from one squeak from my water-saturated violin (it's still yelling at me about the humidity change) the number turned out rather beautifully. All the credit goes to the people upstairs, Calysta, and especially Miya, the professional page turner. :)
All our other meetings were very good too. It was nice not having to teach this week, but as soon as Sunday school ended, the lady over the teaching calendar came and found me again and asked if I could teach next week. I said I would be willing to, but also asked if she wanted someone else from my group to teach. She hesitated for a bit, and then said that she would most appreciate it if I just did it again. I was a little caught off guard by this, but accepted the job again and made a mental note to get the manual back from Connor this week.
After church, we made the wet journey back home. I went upstairs to my room, telling myself that I was going to take a quick nap, but wrote in my journal instead. When I came back downstairs a few hours later, Katy was just pulling dinner out of the oven. I helped wash a bunch of the prep-work dishes while the last few things were being set out for our large group. We weren't having the missionaries over at all on this night, it was just us. We had a lovely meal of shepherd's pie and watermelon that Katy had prepared. It's so nice to have free meals sometimes, it really is! When dinner ended, we all practiced singing the song we will be doing for church next week. We decided to do an a capella version of 'God be with you till we meet again,' which actually sounds pretty fantastic. It seems that many of us know enough about music to sing well in tune, so that's awesome news!
After this wound down, I washed a few more dishes before I went over to the other house to use the pub's frail signal for skype purposes. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to beat the crowd back like I usually have, as many of the Hope Cottage-ers left when I did. Abbey got on Skype just before I did actually, so I really wasn't able to get much of any internet access. Ethan, who luckily for me, is up that early in the morning, was good enough to chat with me via messaging chats, so that was really great still. When I gave up all hope for Skype, I just went back to my house for better reception. It was so great being able to talk with a few people back at home! I love to hear what everyone has been able to do this summer and how people are doing.
The girls wanted to get some studying in for our upcoming final, so we watched one of the history videos we were assigned as homework during the winter semester. This one was about King Arthur, and it was great because it was actually a whole feature film; cheesy, but a whole film. I thought it was funny that Hans Zimmer, who did the score for this movie, must have been on a lazy streak, as almost everything was the exact score from the first Pirates movie.
Sometimes (meaning, almost every time) when you have a bunch of crazy girls living together in a fun house, have them watch a weird movie, and then get them to stay up way to late, strange things can happen. This night was no exception (though it certainly wasn't rare, either). Somehow the social event turned into a friendly but legit grapple session. Miya is easily stronger than a few guys I know, so she was a lot of fun to mess around with. I won't pretend I came off conqueror, but I sure didn't let her walk away comfortably either. All in all, we had a blast.
Eventually, we all got to bed. I ran through my final and much needed activities of the day, and then finally set my alarm to get up for Welsh school in the morning before I crashed for the night.
